What Is a Passed Pawn in Chess?

A passed pawn has no enemy pawns ahead of it on its own file or on the two adjacent files, meaning nothing can stop it from advancing by pawn alone — making it one of the biggest assets in an endgame.

White's pawn on d5 has no black pawns in front of it on the d-, c-, or e-files, so it is fully passed and ready to run.

Why passed pawns are so valuable

Once all the other pawns are gone or blocked, a passed pawn's only remaining obstacle is enemy pieces — and in a king-and-pawn endgame, that often means just the enemy king. Because it threatens to promote into a queen, the opponent must constantly spend time and pieces to stop it, which can tip the whole game.

Protected and outside passed pawns

Not all passed pawns are equal. A protected passed pawn, defended by another pawn, is especially strong because the enemy king can't simply walk up and capture it. An outside passed pawn, far from the rest of the pawns, is dangerous because it can distract the enemy king away from the main action while the rest of the board is decided.

Creating a passed pawn

Passed pawns often appear after trades, particularly in a pawn majority on one side of the board, where extra pawns can be pushed and traded until one breaks through untouched. Recognising when a pawn structure can produce a passed pawn is a key part of planning in the middlegame, not just the endgame.

Frequently asked questions

How do you stop a passed pawn?

Since no pawn can block it, you need a piece — usually a king or rook — to blockade the pawn's path or capture it before it promotes.

Why is a passed pawn stronger in the endgame?

With fewer pieces on the board, there are fewer defenders available to stop the pawn, so its promotion threat becomes much harder to neutralize.

What is a protected passed pawn?

It's a passed pawn that is itself defended by another pawn, making it very hard for the enemy king to approach and capture safely.
